Vilas, NC--A national grassroots campaign has lent its voice to North Carolina's 5th District Congressional race, calling incumbent Virginia Foxx "crazy, cruel and ignorant."
"After years of embarrassing us with her outlandish statements on the House Floor, thrice being labeled the World's Worst Person by TV host Keith Olbermann, and coming home only to stoke the voters' fear and anxiety about the economy, Virginia Foxx's chickens are finally coming home to roost," said Lainey Edmisten, Billy Kennedy's campaign manager.
"Those on the ultra-far right may agree with Foxx," Edmisten continued, "but anyone with a heart and a brain can see what she is up to. She will say anything to get elected."
The spot paid for by Blue America and Americans for America draws heavily for inspiration on the popular iPhone commercial, "There's an App for That." The ad, titled "Think Crazy," is airing online now, and Blue America is raising money to buy television ads in the 5th District. The ad highlights Foxx's position on health-care reform ("more dangerous than any terrorist"), her vote against relief for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, and her demeaning statement on the Matthew Shepard murder made in front of Shepard's own mother.
The ad concludes, "For everyone with a sense of decency and true patriotism in North Carolina's 5th District, there's Billy Kennedy."
When asked his reaction about the ad, Kennedy said, "Dishonest politicians try to divide us and turn us against each other in order to win an election on wedge issues. Politicians of both parties emphasize wedge issues to distract us and avoid talking about the serious problems we face. It is a tactic used to mislead us in order to hide how they really vote about issues that matter.
"More and better jobs, a commitment to Medicare and Social Security, fair taxation, and the failure of bailouts and subsidies to corporations are not wedge issues.
I want to make it clear. I support freedom and equal rights for all people. I will protect all individuals' Constitutional rights, without allowing politicians to pick and choose which Amendments deserve to be taken seriously.
"I want to focus on what all of us can do to improve our lives. I've been listening these last few months to people all over the district. I've made over 18,000 phone calls, and I will not allow my opponent to play politics on questions of economic fairness and individual liberty."
